Career development in Salesforce architecture is moving beyond a certification-only model. In a survey highlighted by Salesforce Ben, 53.2% of architects named gaining hands-on experience as the most effective way to advance, while 28.3% selected additional certifications. The finding does not erase the value of credentials, but it reframes the role they play.
Certifications structure knowledge and establish a shared baseline. Practice adds judgment: making decisions under pressure, balancing security and speed, negotiating priorities and recognizing when a technically possible solution is not the right one. That capability grows when architects stay close to delivery.
Respondents reinforce that connection. 92.2% said they perform hands-on work regularly or to some extent, while 49.7% identified using AI tools in projects and solutions as an effective way to progress. Communication, diagramming and low-code capabilities also ranked highly, showing that the role combines technical depth with the clarity to influence decisions.
To turn the survey into action, architects can build proofs of concept, reserve sandbox time, review implementations and document project decisions. The strongest portfolio is not a list of badges; it is the ability to explain a problem, the trade-offs considered and the real effect of the solution.
